Represented by sixpackfilm
sixpackfilm was founded in 1991 as a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Austrian independent films and videos. From the very beginning the main focus was on experimental cinema belonging to the long and vivid tradition of avant-garde cinema in Austria since the 1950s. Our distribution program contains around 900 titles from more than 200 film- and videomakers, from the main representatives of the history of Austrian avant-garde cinema to young and emerging artists. Thanks to the public funding it receives, sixpackfilm can give independent artists from Austria a chance to distribute their films and videos to festivals around the world.
Besides the focus on experimental films and videos the spectrum of films sixpackfilm distributes ranges from feature documentaries to short fiction and animation.
Short film is normally regarded as an experimental field where new forms and narrative methods are developed and special kinds of aesthetics and visual styles crystallize. Experimental film can also call into question customary viewing experiences and sharpen the viewer’s perception. Although they have abandoned classic narrative strategies, most of the films in this selection tell stories, even when their “protagonists” are natural phenomena or the technical shortcomings of recording systems.
The second part of the program, which is dedicated to animation film, concludes with what is probably the most successful Austrian short film, a hybrid of fiction, experimental and animation film: Virgil Widrich’s Copy Shop was invited to more than 300 festivals around the world, received numerous awards and was nominated for an Oscar in 2001.
The use of found footage represents a broad creative field. Such material can be taken from a wide variety of sources, such as Super-8 home movies, advertising films and features. Artistic work then reveals new layers of meaning, deconstructs cinematic mechanisms or creates miniatures of great visual poetry.
This program includes films by some of the most successful international avant-garde filmmakers, such as Peter Tscherkassky, Martin Arnold and German film artist Matthias Müller, in addition to the works of young auteurs and others who are not as well known.
