Ioanna Athanasatou

She was born in Rafina in 1959. She studied at the Law School of the University of Athens and at the Stavrakos Film School, Department of Film Direction. She was the recipient of a Special Postgraduate Scholarship at the Communication Sector of the Department of Social Sciences of the University of Athens, where she received her Doctorate Degree in 1999, on the relationship between ideology and esthetics in Greek Postwar Cinema (1950-67).

She was a visiting scholar at the State University of Ohio, at the Department of Modern Greek Studies in 1995. Since the year 2000 she has been teaching at the University of Crete, at the Film Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and at the Department of Communication and Mass Media of the University of Athens, where she currently teaches “Gender Studies and Cinema” at the Postgraduate course.

Her studies on Greek cinema led to two publications, in 2001 and 2007. She has also edited the Greek edition of the book “Cinema and Feminism” (2009). She has published numerous articles in scientific publications, collective publications and newspapers.

She has also collaborated with the Greek Open University in matters of her field, and with Media Desk Hellas, the Short Film Festival in Drama, the Institute of Audiovisual Media (IOM) and the Greek Film Archives, and she has participated in numerous conferences in Greece and abroad.
