EUROPE IN SHORTS X

The "Europe in Shorts" programme is an initiative of the European Coordination of Film Festivals with the support of the Media programme of the European Commission. Always linked to a particular subject, it allows short Films to be accessible to the audiences of the festivals which are members of the Coordination.

The tenth edition of the programme is devoted to the new Central and Eastern European member states of the European Union. The selection reflects the various fields of artistic expression which these countries have been exploring since the social upheavals of the year 1990.The highly diversified genres stress the liveliness of the Central and Eastern European Film production. Far from the clichés which their home regions remain confronted with, the directors have been enriching the international cinematography with their specific production. Their particularities stem from the respective film-making traditions by which these countries added their page in the book of Film history. Through anecdotes, paroxystic situations, documentaries and animated Films, «Europe in Shorts X» draws Central and Eastern Europe under the spotlight, tackling individual problems as well as social disruption. "Europe in Shorts X" deals with new opportunities, but also with confronting other cultures in a changing Europe, where from now on, communication is to be carried out through many different languages.

The Films were selected by the Cottbus Film Festival in cooperation with the other member festivals of the Coordination. Since 1991, the Cottbus Film Festival has been dedicated to Eastern European cinema. It was founded with a twofold aim: ensuring that Eastern European Films be shown throughout Germany and monitoring the evolution of film-making in the former socialist republics of Europe. Today, the festival would like to provide film audiences as well as specialists with a comprehensive overview of the current tendencies of Central and Eastern European cinematography.
